Stuffing, sweet pototoes, cranberry sauce, more stuffing, and, of course, the pumpkin pie have all made their way onto (and off of) your plate. If you're like most, you had more than one serving and are still finishing off the leftovers in the form of turkey sandwiches or potato pancakes. I like Thanksgiving just as much as the next foodie, but it can be difficult to devour these holiday delicacies and feel good about it. Subconsciously, we all know that the extra-big slice of pumpkin pie with whipped cream isn't part of your everyday eating and that it's going to result in a couple extra pounds around the mid-section or hips. Keep this up until Christmas and you'll be looking at more than a couple pounds. So what can you do to help keep the pounds off, yet still enjoy the holiday festivities and feasts?

Here are 5 simple tips you can follow for the next month that will help fend off that unwelcome winter coat...

Up your cardio at the gym: 30 minutes of intense cardio at the gym can burn as many as 400 - 500 calories. Do this 2 - 3 times per week and you're looking at burning an extra 800 (2X per week) to 1500 (3X per week) calories over the course of 7 days. If you're someone who gets bored easily, mix up how you burn the calories. Use the treadmill, exercise bike, and the elliptical trainer to add variety, as well as some interval training to up your calorie burn.

Skip the seconds: Though you may be tempted to dive back in for seconds of grandma's homemade apple pie or mom's peanut butter fudge, limiting yourself to a single serving (a small single serving) will prevent you from eating an additional 300 or more calories. Do this just 11 times over the course of the next month and you're looking at an additional pound of fat.

Plan your eating: Make a plan and stick to it. Don't skip meals in anticipation that you'll be eating when you're out. Many times this will result in eating either too much or not enough. Recreational eating is dangerous when it comes to weight gain. If you're going out to a party, have a light, healthy snack beforehand so you don't fall into the trap of having to eat an unhealthy meal that you may otherwise not have eaten. Plus, you may save some $$ too!

Keep a diary: Most people who pack on the pounds over the holiday season don't plan on being 10 pounds heavier than they were the day before Thanksgiving. Weight gain is a gradual process that can go easily unnoticed until you step on the scale January 1st only to realize that things must have gotten a little out of control. Keeping a diary will keep you aware of not only how much you're eating, but the content of what you eat. If you see that you had a slice of pie on Sunday, you'll be less likely to opt for another slice the following Tuesday.

Find a buddy: Why go at it alone? You're not the only one who wants to avoid becoming a fatter person this holiday season. There are millions of people who not only want to avoid putting on extra weight, but also want to lose some weight. When you buddy up with someone, you then become accountable to someone other than yourself. If makes it harder to skip that morning workout and easier to say "no" to the sampler platter appetizer when you're spending time with someone who has the same goals as you.

These are just a few tips that will help you to keep from putting on unwanted holiday weight, while still enjoying the time you spend with your friends and family this holiday season.

Happy Holidays!

A great time to run!

Now that the fall season is upon us in full, the weather it brings creates a great climate for running. Though many people, and several that I train, absolutely hate the idea of getting out and pounding the pavement, running can provide amazing physical and mental heatlh benefits. When incorporating longer periods (as opposed to shorter, higher intensity forms of cardio) of cardiovascular exercise into your fitness regimen, you simply can't beat running...especially when it comes to weight loss.
